Celebrating the International Day of Sign Language: Speaking God’s Love Through Our Hands

Ministry October 7, 2025

With hearts united in service and compassion, the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) of the Municipality of Diplahan joined the world in celebrating the International Day of Sign Language through a meaningful Sign Language Learning Session held at Tropical Resort, Diplahan. The event reminded everyone that communication is not only through words but also through love, patience, and understanding — gifts that reflect the heart of Christ Himself. Truly, as the Bible says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

The program was headed by Ma’am Carmel Jeanice Villaruel, the dedicated Focal Person of PDAO Diplahan, whose leadership continues to build bridges of inclusion for persons with disabilities. Among the participants were PWD presidents from different barangays, representatives from LGU offices, and SPED teachers from Diplahan Central School, all eager to learn how to communicate better with the Deaf community.

In her message, Ma’am Carmel emphasized the importance of learning sign language for PDAO workers to better serve Deaf clients with understanding and compassion. Ma’am Nova Clarice S. Bitantos, a SPED teacher, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to learn basic sign language to communicate more effectively with her Deaf students. Mr. Kevin Ibarrat, a Deaf student and son of a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, also shared how thankful he was to teach Filipino Sign Language for the first time and to see others interested in learning his language.

Together with instructors Clyde Santuyo, President of the Ipil Deaf Association, and Jomar Canabano, the session became both educational and inspiring, showing that sign language is more than a skill — it is a ministry of connection and compassion. Faithful interpreters Rhea Caberte and Paul Caberte served with humility, ensuring that every message of hope flowed freely between Deaf and hearing participants.

The event beautifully reflected the Adventist values of service, inclusiveness, and Christ-centered love. Just as Jesus reached out to every person with tenderness and care, this gathering called all to do the same — to be the voice and hands of love for those who cannot hear but can deeply feel the message of God’s goodness.

As the world celebrated the International Day of Sign Language, the Diplahan community was grateful for the opportunity to learn, serve, and build stronger connections with persons with disabilities — fostering understanding, compassion, and unity for all.
