In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering inclusivity and enhancing communication, the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) Heads of Zamboanga Sibugay Province recently participated in a pioneering Basic Sign Language Training held at the Sibugay Hotel on August 19 and 20. This training marks a significant step forward in the province’s commitment to supporting and integrating persons with disabilities within the community.

The two-day event, a first of its kind in the region, brought together key stakeholders to engage in essential skill-building workshops led by a team of distinguished trainers. The training was conducted by Paulmarc Arbe Caberte and Princess Rhea Caberte, a dedicated couple and experienced Hearing Interpreters, alongside Clyde Santuyo, the Deaf President of Zamboanga Sibugay, and Carren Balandra, two skilled Deaf Interpreters who are passionate to share their language and culture. Their combined expertise provided a comprehensive and insightful learning experience, highlighting the profound impact of Filipino Sign Language (FSL) on effective communication and social inclusion.

Participants included Social Worker Interns from Aurelio Mendoza Memorial College (AMMC) and the PDAO Heads from 16 municipalities across Zamboanga Sibugay. The diversity of attendees underscored the wide-reaching impact of the training and the shared commitment to improving accessibility and support for individuals with hearing impairments.

Throughout the training, the attendees were not only introduced to the fundamentals of FSL but were also engaged in interactive sessions that illustrated the importance of clear and empathetic communication. The hands-on approach and real-life scenarios provided by the trainers opened the eyes of the participants to the significant role that sign language plays in bridging gaps and fostering a more inclusive environment.

For many, this training was an eye-opener. The experience highlighted the critical need for FSL proficiency in various sectors, particularly in social services and community support. The heartfelt testimonials from participants reflected a newfound understanding and appreciation for the nuances of sign language and its power to transform interactions.

This pioneering training is not just a milestone but a beacon of hope. It signifies a collective step towards creating a more inclusive environment where every individual, regardless of their abilities, can communicate, contribute, and thrive. The success of this event promises a ripple effect throughout the province, inspiring further efforts to embrace and integrate Filipino Sign Language in various facets of community life.

By embracing Filipino Sign Language and promoting its use, we are not only enhancing communication but also affirming our commitment to a more inclusive and supportive society for everyone, while holding fast to the hope of ultimate healing and restoration in God’s promised kingdom.
