Talipao, Sulu — March 21, 2026
A five-day site visit and participatory workshop held from March 17 to 21 in Upper Sinumaan brought together architects and local residents to craft development plans rooted in culture and sustainability.

The activity was led by architects Kiara Caramol of Soft Spot Architect, Reynald Bernaldo of Creation Architect, and Evanny Bernaldo. They worked closely with members of the Tausug community to design solutions that are both practical and culturally appropriate.

The team assessed a 7-hectare site, examining its natural and built environment. Covered by a 25-year memorandum of understanding with Bud Mana Volunteers of ZPM Adventist-Muslim Relations, the area is envisioned to become a center for natural farming and community development. The team identified water sources, surveyed various bamboo species—considered the primary construction material—and studied existing bamboo houses to better understand local building practices. Fruit-bearing and old trees were also documented to ensure their preservation in future plans.

A highlight of the visit was the workshop titled “Farmers to Architects,” where community members actively contributed ideas through drawings, symbols, and storytelling. This participatory approach enabled the team to gain deeper insight into Tausug traditions and integrate these into the proposed designs.

The group also met with the commander of the 41st Infantry “Partner for Peace” Battalion, Lt. Col. Genesis Gabrido, to discuss the overall development plan and explore possible improvements for the community. During the meeting, the architects introduced bamboo-strengthening technologies aimed at enhancing durability for long-term construction use.

Central to the initiative was a guiding principle shared by Bernaldo: “We don’t give what they do not have. We improve what they have.”

The activity underscored a collaborative model of development—one that prioritizes local knowledge, cultural identity, and the responsible use of available resources to create sustainable community solutions.
