From Classrooms to Community: A New Generation of Peacebuilders

Education April 7, 2025

In a common purpose, the Barangay Bud Bunga and Barangay Sinumaan Peace Formation and Learning Centers pooled their efforts together on April 3rd, 2025, to give honor to the outstanding accomplishments of 26 grade 6 graduates and 29 Kindergarten for Graduation and Moving up Ceremony with the theme: “Generation for Unity; Partners for the New Philippines”. This joint graduation and moving-up ceremony reflected the strength of collaboration in education toward achieving academic excellence in Sulu.

This joint ceremony highlighted the excellent partnership among the two Sulads mission schools, exemplifying that physical distance is no challenge to united learning objectives. Both Mission Schools are committed to delivering quality learning and peace in the region with the firm conviction that education serves as the primary key to the elevation of life and community.

The event also witnessed the attendance of honored guests from the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division, Philippine Army, who were headed by Major General Leonardo I. Peña, 1101st “Gagandilan” Brigade headed by BGEN Mario Jacinto PA, the 41st Infantry “Partner for Peace” Battalion headed by Lt. Col. Genesis Gabrigoin, and the “Charlie Company” under 1LT Christian E. Villa. Other distinguished guests present were the School Principal of the Palahuddin Primary Elementary School, Dr. Reckmar J. Abtong where the Learning Center is connected, and the School Division Superintendent, Dr. Kiram K. Irilis, PhD. Their participation was a reflection of how education could be used for bringing peace and stability in the area.

The ceremony started with an inspiring welcome speech by graduate Kleiah Caith E. Lloren, then the presentation of candidates and affirmation by school principals and superintendent.

Major General Peña gave a motivating speech, highlighting the power of education as a means to peace and development “Today is not just about completing a grade level; it’s about how these students have matured in character and intellect, and how their achievement will be a shining light of hope for their communities, and in the future become leaders” and reciting the motivational verse, Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Sharing this bible verse to parents reminding them that training their child and shaping them leads them to success. He also emphasizes that the home is the first place to shape dreams and achieve them.

The event was emotive as students collected their certificates, diplomas, and awards. Each graduate spared a moment to look back on their learning journey, thanking their teachers and families for their support. Through the support of the local community and stakeholders the achievement of the students was realized against the odds of challenges that often accompany teaching in rural and underprivileged areas. The Principal, Mr. Abtong shares the positive impact of the SULADS Volunteer in the community and in the Department of Education as he expressed, “We hope to see more dedicated SULADS and strong partnership with them. We seek more help from SULADS for quality education and peace and unity in Upper Sinumaan and Bud Bunga.”

Community leaders also revealed their hope for the future, seeing these graduates as Sulu’s future leaders and peace builders. Their achievements were celebrated as a group effort, with a collective resolve to help them continue to excel. The ceremony ended with cheers and applause, not only celebrating individual success but the unifying power of education to instill hope and forge a brighter future for Sulu.

Peace Formation and Learning Center continues to nourish young minds, imbue them with peaceful values, doggedness, and hope. These alumni, with increased community support, are well-situated to make a deep impact on the communities they enter and beyond. This commencement is proof that education can enact lasting change.
