Zamboanga del Sur, Bayog, December 5-6, 2024 – Pupils from Sibuguey Valley Adventist Elementary School (SVAES) brought honor to their institution by securing fourth place out of 32 elementary schools that participated in the recently concluded MDRRM Rescue Olympics 2024. The prestigious event, held at the Bayog Municipal Gymnasium, tested the skills and knowledge of young individuals in disaster preparedness and response.
The SVAES team, composed of ten pupils—Mark Zhyden Loristo (team leader), Keisha Kayley Ilagan, Rachelle Obnimaga, Keith Angel Sudiang, Micheal Angelou Naraga, Divine Rose Larracochia, Krezelle Mae Bueno, Arkilez Conzon, Rence Korver Fortuna, and Ardz Mejos—impressed the judges with their exceptional performance in various challenges, including:
- Bucket Relay: Demonstrating strength and unity in passing a bucket of water efficiently.
- Search and Rescue: Navigating obstacle courses and locating victims in mock disaster scenarios.
- Lifting and Human Carry: The group was divided into two teams to execute the proper way of lifting a victim.
- Knot Tying: Performing 10 different basic knots essential for rescuing victims in future emergencies.
“The real purpose of conducting Rescue Olympics is to teach the residents of Bayog to be alert and knowledgeable about how to rescue victims in future emergencies,” said Cerilo B. Carcueva, head of MDRRM Bayog. He added, “Disasters may happen anywhere and anytime, so it’s better to always be ready.”
The SVAES pupils’ success is a testament to their dedication, hard work, and the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of preparedness. By participating in such events, young individuals gain valuable life skills and contribute to building a safer community.
