Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur—In response to the devastating floods that struck Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur, ADRA Philippines swiftly mobilized relief efforts, distributing 600 food packages to affected families. The flood, which claimed the life of a farmer, impacted 1,227 households and partially destroyed close to 50 hectares of rice fields, leaving many in dire need of assistance.

Local officials reported that the flood that occurred last May 17, caused by days of relentless rain, led to widespread damage in agricultural areas, jeopardizing the food security and livelihood of many farmers. ADRA Philippines, a humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, responded promptly, coordinating with community leaders to identify the most affected families and ensure timely aid distribution. The food packages contained essential items designed to sustain families as they work toward recovery.

The local ACS chapter, headed by Pastor Jeramel Punay, played a vital role in the relief effort, volunteering their time to repack and distribute food packages to affected households. Their dedication exemplified the spirit of service that defines ACS, ensuring that aid reached those who needed it most. Pastor Carmelito Asoy, ACS director of the Zamboanga Peninsula Mission (ZPM), reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to supporting communities in crisis, assuring continued collaboration with ADRA Philippines in relief operations.

ADRA’s Emergency Response Coordinator, Sir Mark Morta, who led the Kumalarang Response, emphasized that humanitarian aid transcends boundaries. “Relief knows no boundaries,” Morta stated, underscoring the organization’s commitment to helping all those affected, regardless of background or circumstance. “We are committed to helping communities rebuild after disasters, providing food relief is just one part of our mission to support families during these difficult times.” Many recipients expressed deep gratitude for the assistance, stating that it eased their burden as they began assessing the damage and seeking ways to recover lost income.

Honorable Vice Mayor Pinky Molina expressed her sincerest gratitude on behalf of the municipality, acknowledging the unwavering support from ADRA Philippines and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. “We deeply appreciate the generosity and compassion shown to Kumalarang during this difficult time,” she said. Molina’s message highlighted the importance of unity and partnership in overcoming disasters and rebuilding affected communities.

Authorities and relief organizations continue to monitor the situation and explore long-term recovery measures. Local leaders are urging the national government and private sectors to extend further support, including agricultural rehabilitation efforts to help farmers restore their livelihoods. Meanwhile, ADRA Philippines remains active in disaster response, reaffirming its dedication to assisting vulnerable communities across the country.
