The island community of Punduhan in Tawi-Tawi experienced a heartwarming display of compassion and unity on January 12, 2025, as the MAS-AMICUS MSU-TCTO Chapter, in collaboration with SULADS volunteers, conducted a meaningful outreach program for the villagers. The event coincided with the Mission School’s New Year program, which was centered around the theme “A Prosperous New Year.” This outreach went beyond a traditional celebration, extending God’s blessings to the people of Punduhan through a nourishing feeding program, bringing much-needed support to over 103 primary school students and countless community members.
Punduhan, a remote village characterized by its stilt houses and isolation from the mainland, had been enduring the challenges of limited resources and external aid. Yet, through the dedicated collaboration of MAS-AMICUS members and SULADS missionaries Nestor Lucernas, Patrick Angas, and Joshua Jimenez, the outreach program reached beyond the simple act of giving food. It sparked a spirit of hope, connection, and resilience in the hearts of the islanders.
In the face of the island’s physical and logistical challenges, this partnership became an instrument of transformation, exemplifying the core message of Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Volunteers and missionaries worked tirelessly to overcome geographical barriers, ensuring aid reached the people with efficiency, warmth, and compassion.
The event not only brought material support but also created a vibrant atmosphere of joy, strengthening the community’s sense of unity and connection. The emotional responses from the villagers and the heartfelt gratitude expressed by the students left a lasting impression on both the recipients and the volunteers. This day of service, rich with the spirit of mutual aid, is expected to positively influence the community in the long run, fostering a sense of collective identity and resilience that will carry them through future challenges.
Beyond the immediate impact, the success of the program highlighted the crucial role that youth play in fostering community development. The MAS-AMICUS MSU-TCTO Chapter’s initiative underscores the transformative potential of young people who are committed to making a difference, as they demonstrate social responsibility in their actions. By reaching out to underserved and marginalized communities, these young volunteers show that youth engagement is an essential component of sustainable and meaningful change.
This outreach program is part of MAS-AMICUS’s broader “Reach the Unreached 2025” initiative, which aims to replicate such successful programs across other underserved areas of Tawi-Tawi. In addition to serving those in need, the program embodies a deeper commitment to character-building, emulating the life of Christ who mingled with people, ministered to their needs, and invited them to follow Him. Through efforts like these, MAS-AMICUS strives to foster a spirit of service and compassion, ultimately making a lasting impact on both the volunteers and the communities they serve.
