Empowered to Evangelize: Women Bringing the Gospel from Training to Community Homes

Women December 13, 2024

A Comprehensive Bible Study Training was conducted on November 30, 2024, at the Zamboanga Peninsula Mission (ZPM) headquarters in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay Province. The event, themed “I Will Go, Reach My World,” brought together 206 Women’s and Family Ministries local church leaders from across the ZPM territory. Under the leadership of Pastor Eliezer M. Bacus and his wife, Mrs. Shirley M. Bacus—Women’s and Family Ministries Director of the Southwestern Philippine Union Conference—the participants received instruction aimed at transforming them into effective spiritual frontliners for Christ.

Divided into five major lecture sessions, the training focused on the rationale behind the mission, including the church’s total membership involvement; preparation for Bible studies; simple methods of giving Bible instruction; strategies for identifying potential interests and approaching people; and techniques for leading individuals to make decisions for Christ. Interspersed with these lectures were workshop sessions, during which attendees tackled real-life scenarios to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice.

One of the training’s highlights was the two-hour fieldwork activity conducted under the scorching Tiayon sun. 206 women marched into nearby communities, armed with Bibles, barangay permits, and survey questionnaires covering family, health, and values. They went door-to-door, braving both welcoming smiles and slammed doors. While some, like participant Mezzel Mae Macias, experienced initial rejection, they did not lose heart. Instead, they persevered and successfully connected with at least six individuals, demonstrating faith and resilience even amidst difficulty.

Many of the participants found that local families were receptive to opening their homes for Bible studies. As Olutanga participant, Rosaly Altoveros Sumicad of OLUTALMA (Olutanga-Talusan-Mabuhay) shared: “This is not new or difficult for us, especially for women from OLUTALMA. We do this during our spare time. We often make excuses to the Lord, claiming we’re too busy, but being busy should never be an excuse to neglect ministry and saving souls for Christ. Regardless of who that person may be, we are commissioned to proclaim His name and are compelled to do so.”

The training-seminar was facilitated by Mrs. Sharon B. Dulang, ZPM Women’s Ministries and Family Ministries Director, who announced plans for a reunion in the future to celebrate progress and sustain the momentum of the ministry. ZPM President, Pastor Arnold C. Sombilon, led the commitment and dedicatory prayer as the event drew to a close. A commitment message was delivered by retired pastor and former ZPM President, Pastor Eliezer M. Bacus, who, together with Mrs. Bacus, expressed delight in witnessing the fervor and dedication of the women in the field.

As the group concluded their training and fieldwork, the echoes of their theme song, “Here I Am, Lord,” remained in their hearts. Empowered and prepared, these women are ready to transform lives—one home at a time—faithfully answering the call to bring Christ to every thirsty soul.
