The MAS AMICUS Convention 2024 was a momentous event held at the Zamboanga Peninsula Mission, bringing together 101 delegates from various chapters across the Misson. Delegates from Zamboanga Chapter, Tampilisan, Buug, Ipil, Tungawan, Tawi-Tawi, Siocon, Sindangan, Siay, and Malangas gathered to celebrate a weekend of spiritual renewal, fellowship, and learning.
The convention emphasized fostering a missionary spirit among young people studying in non-Adventist institutions. It aimed to inspire these students to bring the light of Jesus to their campuses, encouraging them to actively share their faith and positively impact their academic environments.
The convention kicked off on August 23, 2024, with the arrival of the delegates at 5 p.m. Excitement and anticipation filled the headquarters as members from different chapters reconnected and prepared for the weekend’s activities. The official program began at 7 p.m. with Vesper worship. The evening opened with opening remarks from Mr. Kevin Earl Ligan, the MAS AMICUS Federation President, who welcomed everyone. The Ipil Chapter then led the congregation in an uplifting opening song, paving the way for the evening’s keynote lecture.
Sir Winefredo Mendez, one of the pioneers of the Mas-Amicus and a former MAS-Amicus Alumni President, traveled far to make time to show the very purpose of this organization. His lecture centered on the rich history of MAS AMICUS, highlighting its humble beginnings and how, through God’s guidance and wisdom, the organization grew into a large and vibrant community. He poignantly remarked, “It all started with a small group of founders until God became the founder, and MAS AMICUS became a big family.”
The second day of the convention, August 24, 2024, began early with a morning worship at 5 AM, held in the kitchen area. Sir Gee Xyrus Pamunag, an alumnus of MAS AMICUS, shared his personal testimony of how God blessed him through his involvement in the organization. He reminded the delegates of the importance of loving the Lord with all their heart, soul, and strength.
At exactly 8 a.m., the Sabbath School commenced. Ma’am Clendelyn Jane Perez, a MAS AMICUS alumnus from Iligan, presented a detailed explanation of the organizational structure of MAS AMICUS. This was followed by a lecture on the constitution and by-laws by another speaker, who emphasized the significance of membership and the process of becoming a part of the MAS AMICUS family.
The Divine Service, led by the Tampilisan and Sindangan chapters, was a highlight of the day. The service began with the MAS AMICUS theme song, performed as a special number, setting a solemn yet joyous atmosphere. Sir Winefredo Mendez returned to deliver the divine message, focusing on the limitless power of God. “God can do everything,” he reminded the congregation, encouraging them to trust in His providence.
The afternoon featured an AY (Adventist Youth) program, where delegates from each chapter had the opportunity to raise questions and discuss ways to improve the organization. This interactive session was a valuable time for reflection and planning, ensuring that MAS AMICUS continues to grow and thrive.
The convention concluded with a heartfelt commitment to service. Ma’am Kaye Ramos, a professor at WMSU, delivered the commitment message. She said, “To be a missionary in a secular world, start by living out your faith and integrity.” “Go light your world,” a call to action that was echoed in the closing commitment song.
The MAS AMICUS Convention 2024 was not just a gathering but a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of community, faith, and service.
The delegates left the event inspired and motivated to continue their mission in their respective chapters, united in their commitment to serve God and their fellow man.
